How Public Art is Supporting Mental Health

The third mural in the Every Part Matters community art project is now installed at the 82nd and Allisonville Jiffy Lube of Indiana location. The design, based on artwork from graphic novel, “Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, and Me,” by Ellen Forney, aims to bring awareness to the challenges of mental health.

As part of the awareness campaign, Jiffy Lube is raising money for NAMI Indiana through the sale of green ribbons at all of their 47 locations throughout the state. NAMI Indiana is a grassroots public charity helping people living with serious mental illnesses, their families, and friends.

“This project has been an amazing process and my eyes have been opened to just how many people are struggling with mental illness, and just how much acknowledging it can help. I hope the “You Have Company” mural and funds raised from the green ribbons for NAMI are a step in the right direction to supporting the millions of families impacted by mental illness every day,” commented Steve Sanner, Owner, Jiffy Lube of Indiana.

Two essential parts of the mural creation process were Ellen Forney and the Department of Public Words. Ellen provided not only the design for the project, but she was also able to make a special trip from her home in Seattle to take part in the painting of the mural. The Department of Public Words spearheaded the preparation and installation the artwork of this mural as well as the first two Every Part Matters murals located in Broad Ripple and Carmel, Indiana.

Next time you drive north on Allisonville towards 82nd street, keep an eye out for the colorful mural. And be sure to stop by any of our locations to support NAMI Indiana and their support of families dealing with the challenges of mental health.

The murals are designed by artists and painted by Central Indiana community members before being installed. Jiffy Lube hopes to set an example of how businesses can contribute and support the community in creative ways not normally associated with their specific line of business.
