Ahhh, Spring Break! That annual opportunity to enjoy warmer temps and a much-needed break from the daily grind. It also means millions of additional drivers hitting the roads. In fact, Orbitz estimates that in 2015, 55% of college students planned to travel for Spring Break. Of those students travelling, nearly 50% intended to drive.
Whether you are a road trip veteran, or a student headed out for the first time, the following tips will go a long way in keeping you safe.
Have your vehicle inspected. You’ll want to do this well before your trip to allow enough time for any needed repairs. We know it’s hard to remember to keep up with preventative care. Use your upcoming road trip as the motivation you may need to bring in your vehicle for maintenance and avoid a breakdown.
Bring a paper map. Yes, we said it. Bring one of those old-fashioned things your parents used. GPS and Google are wonderful. However, you’ll need a backup in case you travel through an area with bad service.
Pack an emergency kit. Jumper cables, flashers, tire gauge, windshield scraper, flashlight, extra batteries, water, and non-perishable snacks are a great list of items to start your kit.
Take turns behind the wheel. Rotating drivers will help everyone stay rested and alert. Give the driver the added benefit of control over music choice and be sure to pull over and switch drivers frequently to avoid fatigue. Some experts suggest you need at least a 15-minute break after every two hours of driving.
Never get in a vehicle with someone under the influence. Today’s world offers too many options for safe rides to ever take that risk. Designate a sober driver. Or take advantage of the services from Taxi Cabs, Uber, Lyft, etc.
Never text and drive. Enough said.
