When you see the name premium on something, you often assume it’s a higher quality product. However, this isn’t necessarily the case when it comes to gasoline. Premium gas refers to the octane content, not the quality, and is only necessary when specifically recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
Octane is a measurement used to measure a fuel’s ability to resist engine combustion from happening at the wrong time—known as “knock” or “pre-ignition.” Since premium-grade gas is designed to enhance the performance of only certain types of vehicles, it’s a waste of money to use in those cars or trucks that take regular grade gas.
A survey by AAA found that more than $2.1 billion dollars was wasted on premium gasoline by American drivers in one year. It also found 70% of American drivers owned a vehicle that required regular gasoline, while only 16% drove premium fuel vehicles. (Mid-grade gas and alternative energy source vehicles made up the remaining 14 percent.) However, the same survey determined more than 16.5 million drivers unnecessarily used premium gas in their vehicle at least once over a one-year period. And those that upgraded to premium, did so at least once per month. *
To determine if your vehicle requires premium gasoline, look inside your owners manual. There is also usually a sticker inside your fuel door that lists your vehicle’s fuel requirements. If the manual says premium gas is required, you need to be sure you use premium gas. However, if your manual says premium gas is recommended, it’s ok to choose either type of gasoline. If you are looking to upgrade to a higher quality fuel, select a TOP TIER™ gasoline, not a higher-octane one.
